The Rise of Skywalker is going to be released this week and will mark the end of the Skywalker Saga. With the characters' fate most likely sealed in the upcoming movie, what's next for the Star Wars franchise? Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy offers us some detail regarding the matter.

In a recent interview with Los Angeles Times, Kennedy was asked about the future plans for the franchise. "Obviously, that's what's we've been spending so much time talking about," she said. "And it's a really important transition for Star Wars."

She said that they have been "focused" on the last five or six years "finishing" the Skywalker family saga, and is now time to "start thinking about how to segue into something new and different."

Kennedy revealed to the outlet that she will be making key decisions on what direction the franchise is going towards in the coming weeks, but she assures that they won't abandon the characters of the sequel trilogy. In addition, she also revealed that Star Wars plans to move beyond trilogies.

"I think it gives us a more open-ended view of storytelling and doesn't lock us into this three-act structure," she added. She said they won't just be having "some finite number and fit it into a box," and the story of Episode IX will "dictate that."

The next Star Wars film is set for a release date on the year 2020, but not much is known about it yet. For now, you can look out for The Rise of Skywalker to hit theaters on December 20.
