Lucasfilm Hoping to Work With Weiss and Benioff on Future Star Wars Project Despite Departure

While everyone is talking about The Mandalorian, big Star Wars news also came when it was announced that the trilogy David Benioff and D.B. Weiss were working on has been canceled. Depending on who you ask, this was either disappointing or great news, with bitter Game of Thrones fans part of the latter. Since the duo now has commitments on Netflix, they are too busy for one of the biggest franchises on Earth.

LucasFilm President Kathleen Kennedy made it clear that the door will always be open for the former Game of Thrones showrunners, saying:

"David Benioff and Dan Weiss are incredible storytellers. We hope to include them in the journey forward when they are able to step away from their busy schedule to focus on Star Wars."

It's not yet clear what their Netflix projects are going to be, though most of us are hoping that its an adaptation of something complete and not an original creation where they have to start from the ground up. That might sound cruel but Game of Thrones was fine until the duo no longer had anything to adapt, making their original material much weaker than their adaptations.

Amazon also showed interest in the two for their Lord of the Rings series but it looks like that won't be happening. Some fans were open to this since Lord of the Rings is complete and Game of Thrones wasn't but let's wait and see.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker comes out on December 20.
