Legion Creator Noah Hawley Says His Star Trek Movie will have Entirely New Crew

While Star Trek has been making a big comeback in television, Paramount Pictures is still trying to figure out what to do with the film franchise. Legion creator Noah Hawley had been tapped to direct the next Trek film, and he's revealed a few details about his project.

Talking to Variety, Hawley reveals that his movie won't deal with a familiar crew like Kirk or Picard's, but an entirely new ensemble. He says:

"We're not doing Kirk and we're not doing Picard… It's a start from scratch that then allows us to do what we did with ‘Fargo,' where for the first three hours you go, ‘Oh, it really has nothing to do with the movie,' and then you find the money. So you reward the audience with a thing that they love."

Apparently, Paramount has put Hawley's Trek movie on hold, as the story was said to be dealing with a virus that had wiped out ‘vast parts of the known universe'—which is probably hitting too close to home for a lot of people. Nevertheless, the script had been finished, and Hawley was currently looking for designers to decide on the look of the film.

Personally, I would have loved to see a return to the Kelvin timeline with Chris Pine's Kirk. Star Trek Beyond was actually a step in the right direction, but some poor marketing had led to the franchise being put on hold; just when they were planning on doing a time travel film to bring back Chris Hemsworth's George Kirk.

Paramount has not announced the next Trek movie, but you can catch all kinds of Star Trek spinoffs on CBS All Access.
