Legendary Actress Helen Mirren Attacks Netflix In Defence Of Cinema

Streaming might be the most popular form of media today with Netflix at its forefront, but legendary actress Helen Mirren isn't quite keen on the site.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Excalibur and The Queen star recently attended this year's Cinema Con to help promote her upcoming film The Good Liar, a thriller film directed by Bill Condon and co-starring X-Men's Ian McKellen.

Taking to the sage of CinemaCon to speak with her fans, Mirren decided to address the changing landscape of the entertainment industry, giving a few choice words for Netflix and the streaming movement.

"I love Netflix, but f*** Netflix. There's nothing like sitting in the cinema and the lights go down. I would like to thank you guys for making that environment possible," the actress told audiences present at the event.

While this might seem a bit backward considering the ever-changing times, readers have to remember that CinemaCon is an annual gathering of Hollywood studios and cinema owners. Mirren's opening was actually welcomed with a loud round of applause by those at the event.

The actress' opinion echoes that of Steven Spielberg and his motion to update the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences' rules of eligibility for the Oscars in a petition to keep Netflix films from joining the competition.

Of course, while more traditional filmmakers seem to be staunch detractors of Netflix, it doesn't seem like the streaming giant will go away any time soon. After all, cinema-viewing is a privilege not all can afford.
