Lashana Lynch made her surprise return to the MCU earlier this year when she showed up as Earth-838's version of Captain Marvel in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. A lot of fans were shocked by her appearance considering that her character Maria Rambeau already died off-screen as revealed during the events of WandaVision.
Speaking with Empire Magazine, Lynch breaks silence on her surprise appearance in the Doctor Strange sequel where she said that she was also shocked that she was asked to return in the franchise despite her Captain Marvel character's off-screen death.
"It was a wild one. [Marvel Studios president] Kevin Feige had messaged me, letting me know about Maria’s demise. [Characters] spoke of it in WandaVision, which I’m glad that they did because at least that’s good context," Lynch said.
Later on, Lynch received a call from a producer on Captain Marvel who revealed to her their plans to bring back her character through the possibility of the multiverse and she will come back as a version of Captain Marvel.
"One of the producers of Captain Marvel called me and said they had this idea to bring all these new versions of characters back together and they wanted to bring Maria back," the actress recalled. "I was like, ‘Great, okay, she’s gonna be an ancestor.’ ‘No, she’s gonna be Captain Marvel.’ It blew my mind."
When Lynch finally met some of her co-stars in the film such as Hayley Atwell, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Chiwetel Ejiofor, it still didn't sink in for her that she will be part of a special moment in the film.
"Hayley, Benedict, Chiwetel, a group of us were on Zoom just staring at each other going, ‘What is happening?!’ I embraced Maria as a ‘super-mum’, having a chance to flex in this very new but already existent way. It felt like it was meant to be for her," she continued to recall.
Despite the character's death, Lynch is still hopeful that she can make a comeback through the Ancestral Plane just like what happened in Black Panther. "Listen, I’ve already mentioned to Kevin about ancestors. I was like, ‘You know in Black Panther when the dad is a panther in the tree? Maybe Maria could be by a tree somewhere!’," she concluded.
This is the first time that Lynch candidly discussed her experience of working in the film and it sounds like she had a pleasant time reprising the role of Maria Rambeau in a new way. It would be curious to see if Marvel will bring her back again for another special appearance and since we're in the Multiverse Saga, the possibilities are endless at this point.
