After the dramatic conclusion of Lanterns season 1, co-creator Damon Lindelof revealed on Collider that while HBO has not officially handed down an order for season 2, their core group of writers are already on the case of outlining potential storylines for where the DCU series could go next.
The most that Lindelof could tease is that, despite "not knowing anything" about what the writers are cooking up, the original comic books had shown Hal "die 3 or 4 times over the canon," heavily implying that the first season's ending is far from the show's peak storyline.
He also emphasized that the creative team knew the season 1 climax would be emotionally heavy for fans, but they wanted to deliver a resolute ending rather than rely on cheap cliffhangers.
What Fans Can Expect From Lanterns Season 2 After Season 1's Ending
Showrunner Chris Mundy indicated that Lanterns season 2 will likely remain grounded on Earth rather than jumping into deep space, all to maintain the show's dark tone, True Detective style.
After discovering that Sheriff Kerry Kane was the one who actually killed Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler), John Stewart steps out of his mentor's shadow as he chooses his own path, letting Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion) handle cosmic duties while he protects Earth on his own terms using Sinestro's unauthorized lantern battery.
Hal Jordan's death closes a major chapter, but as Lindelof noted, the comic lore frequently resurrects Hal through various cosmic mechanisms (like Parallax), leaving the door open for a subtle future possibility down the line.
With Sinestro back in play and the Manhunter threat exposed, Lanterns season 2 is leaning on exploring the fallout of illegal battery power and secret factions operating on Earth.
