A legendary Monthly Afternoon manga has finally concluded. Twelve years after it started serialization, the Land of the Lustrous manga ended on April 25, 2024.
The series’ final chapter was released in the latest issue of Kodansha’s Monthly Afternoon magazine, which was released yesterday in Japan.
To mark the series’ conclusion, the magazine featured a special cover featuring the manga’s protagonist, Phos. Also in the magazine are some words by the series’ creator, Haruko Ichikawa.
Monthly Afternoon Celebrates Ending with Special Land of the Lustrous Visual
Land of the Lustrous is one of the most popular titles in Monthly Afternoon alongside the likes of Vinland Saga, Skip and Loafer, Heavenly Delusion, and Blue Period.
Much like these other manga, Land of the Lustrous also got an anime adaptation, which was produced by studio Orange (of Beastars and Trigun Stampede fame and released back in 2017.
Given that the manga has been ongoing since October 2012, the series’ ending is a big event for the magazine. So, it’s no surprise that the latest issue features a special cover.
This cover features a colorful yet melancholic illustration of Phos in a field of flowers. It doesn’t exactly spoil the events of the final chapter, though it does hint at what readers can expect.
Aside from the visual, series creator Ichikawa shared in the latest magazine issue that she is glad she was able to end the series as planned.
Ichikawa also thanked fans for their support over the past 12 years.
Given that the ending proceeded as planned and wasn’t rushed, most fans were happy with how the series concluded.

Fans Are Satisfied with the Land of the Lustrous Ending
Since the anime adaptation aired, the Land of the Lustrous manga has gained a dedicated following internationally thanks to its unique story and atmosphere.
Not all manga endings are well received. Thus, many fans were relieved that the Land of the Lustrous manga had a fitting ending.
Various threads on Reddit and X (formerly Twitter) featured comments from fans about how the ending was a beautiful yet bittersweet one.

Where to Read the Land of the Lustrous Manga’s Final Chapter
In Japan, fans can read Land of the Lustrous chapter 108 in the latest issue of Monthly Afternoon. The final chapter is also available on Kodansha Comic Plus online.
Sadly for fans outside of Japan, they can only read the manga officially in English through the Kodansha Comics volume releases.
Currently, the first 12 volumes are available in English, though there’s no word yet on when the 13th and final volume will be released.
