Variety confirmed that Keanu Reeves has officially signed on to reprise the role of John Wick in the animated prequel movie, voicing the younger version of the iconic hitman.

This will mark the A-list star's return to his fan-favorite role, as the fifth movie is still in early development, and it remains unknown at this point whether he will show up again in the live-action projects.

The untitled animated prequel will recount the origins of John Wick as he completes the Impossible Task, killing all his rivals in one night to free himself from his obligation to the High Table and earn the right to be with the love of his life, Helen.

Shannon Tindle is directing the film, while Ryan and Kaz Firpo are writing the screenplay. Reeves and Chad Stahelski, who directed the live-action movies, are also involved as producers of the project.

Lionsgate already teased the animated prequel movie project last year, as motion picture chair Adam Fogelson said in the announcement: "In both animation and the world of John Wick, the possibilities are endless. And there is no John Wick story fans are clamoring for more than the ‘Impossible Task.’ Shannon’s take on that story is an incredible one, and we are beyond excited to see what John Wick can do in animation."

It would be interesting to see whether the animated prequel movie will also bring back some of the live-action actors in the earlier films to reprise their respective roles.

A fifth John Wick movie is currently in the works, but it is currently in early development. It remains unknown whether Keanu Reeves has officially committed to returning in the installment.

In a 2025 interview, director Chad Stahelski teased the plans that he has in store for the fifth movie and how it will be different from the previous stories.

He said, "The saga of John Wick was pretty wrapped up. So the only way to do a 5 is to have a new story that involves John Wick. It’s not a continuation, with the High Table. John dealt with his grief. It will be really different, and everybody [will] see the trailer and go, ‘Holy fuck... I gotta see that.’"

For now, stay tuned for more news and updates regarding the potential fifth movie in the coming months.
