Kathleen Kennedy Explains Why Upcoming Star Wars Movies Are Taking So Long

Star Wars theatrical absence has been felt for a while now, with Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker being their last film. That said, the franchise’s return to theaters is highly anticipated.

The recently conducted Star Wars Celebration has given the fans something to hold on to after the announcement of a slate of projects, including new movies that are soon to be released.

Rian Johnson and Taika Waititi are just two of the big directors that are set to work on the upcoming new Star Wars movies. But how long will fans wait to see their projects on screen?

Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy recently sat down with Empire Magazine and revealed the reason Johnson and Waititi’s Star Wars movies are taking so long.

“Rian and I talk all the time. [...] [He] just keeps getting more and more successful, and it keeps moving things back further and further. One day we'll figure this out. And Taika is working away. He's just, and he won't get mad at me for saying this, slow. We've got a couple of acts, we need a third. And 'Lando' is still on the books, and 'Rogue Squadron' is still on the books. We just want them to be great.” explained Kennedy.

Earlier this month, Kennedy also revealed why they decided to "eventise" Star Wars on the big screen while emphasizing that fans shouldn't expect another film until at least 2025.

“I’ve often brought up Bond. That’s every three or four years and there wasn’t this pressure to feel like you had to have a movie every year. I feel that was very important to Star Wars.” she said then.

Kennedy continued, We have to eventise this. It’s much better to tell the truth that we’re going to make these movies when they’re ready to be made, and release them when they’re ready to be released.”

In an interview with Variety last month, Kennedy explained the delays with Johnson's Star Wars movies given his tight schedule working on the Glass Onion movies.

“We're not actively involved in anything at the moment because he's doing another one of the 'Glass Onion' movies and then God knows what else. But he really wants to step back into space. It's a big commitment of time, so that's really on him.” said the Lucasfilm president.

Meanwhile, she also talked about Waititi's writing process, initially describing it as protective rather than slow, which she tends to claim now.

“Taika is still working away. [...] He's writing the script himself. He doesn't really want to bring others into that process and I don't blame him. He has a very, very unique voice. So we want to protect that and that's what he's doing. But we're going to make that one day.” Kennedy underscored.

For now, Star Wars fans have to remember that good things come to those who wait.
