The Start of Karl Urban’s Entertainment Career

The now-50-year-old star started his entertainment career in New Zealand in the 1990s. At the time, he would appear in the country’s films and TV series.

Just like Antony Starr, he was seen in Xena: Warrior Princess and Hercules: The Legendary Journeys.

However, everything changed when he received his big Hollywood break in 2002 when he joined the cast of Ghost Ship.

From one big franchise to another, he joined Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness as Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy, The Chronicles of Riddick and Riddick as Vaako and The Bourne Supremacy as Kirill.

He was also seen as Judge Dredd in Dredd, CIA agent William Cooper in RED and Skurge in Thor: Ragnarok.

One of the most famous roles that Karl Urband played is Eomer. In his interview with The Guardian in May, he revealed the significant impact it had on his entire career.

After struggling in his professional career in New Zealand, he moved to Australia, only to return to his home country later.

"I'm a firm believer in the philosophy, 'An opportunity neglected does not often return,'” he said. “So I went back to New Zealand and did a bunch of New Zealand films."

Harry Sinclair, the director of The Price of Milk movie, happened to be friends with Peter Jackson. As he was shown the film's rough cut, the latter director was casting The Lord of the Rings in New Zealand.

"I just happened to be in Peter's face when he was looking for someone to cast as Eomer in The Lord of the Rings," he revealed.

From there, securing the role and appearing in its two movies “changed his life,” resulting in doing several big TV and movie projects.
