Joker Set To Beat Deadpool As Highest-Grossing R-Rated Movie Of All Time

The Joker might have been shrouded in major controversy before its release, but it looks like the critically-acclaimed DC movie is on track to become the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time.

Sure, Deadpool might still own the title with its $738 million haul at the global box office, however, the successfully 2016 X-Men spinoff movie is running the risk of losing its name as the highest-grossing R-rated movie to Todd Phillip's gritty character study of Gotham's Clown Prince of Crime.

According to The Hollywood Reporter,Joker is soon going to surpass Ryan Reynold's comic book movie, long before it completes its run in cinemas. Last weekend, the DC entry starring Joaquin Phoenix managed to rake in another $77.9 million at the worldwide box office and then another $29.2 million at the domestic forefront. That brings the film to a global total of $737.5 million.

Another $50 million or so, and the film is set to beat Deadpool in a week or so. When the film completes its run, industry analysts believe that Joker would have raked close to $900 million, breaking the 20th Century Fox comic book movie's title for good.

This is pretty good news for DC. The film which won the highest award at the Venice Film Festival had been met with a whole lot of controversy before its release. Not only did the US military confirm that there was at least one credible report of a potential shooting during a Joker screening, but the FBI also began looking into Joker posts on social media, while the New York Police department went around patrolling screenings to make sure that there would be no threats during the opening of the film.

Looks like the controversy couldn't hold the film back.
