JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Creator Hirohiko Araki Originally Wanted Giorno To Be A Woman

We already know that Jolyne Cujoh is the first female lead in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure but it looks like Hirohiko Araki had planned for another character to be a woman. The manga creator had reportedly wanted to portray Giorno Giovanna to be a female but was dissuaded by his editor.

Giorno is a truly unique lead in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. After all, the previous main characters have been Joestars while Giorno is the son of the original major villain Dio Brando. Well, technically, he's also a Joestar since he was conceived while Dio was using Jonathan Joestar's body. However, there was another reason why Giorno was initially supposed to stand out.

A Reddit post confirms that Araki had actually considered making Part 5 lead a woman. However, editor Hiroshi Sekiya dissuaded him from the idea by pointing out that a female lead would be a "tough sell" to Weekly Shonen Jump readers. This leads to Araki choosing to make Giorno a young man instead.

Interestingly, it is also noted that Giorno's Japanese name Haruno Shiobana is feminine and that his stand's ability to create life is similar to a woman's ability to give birth.

The amazing part of Sekiya's revelation is that Araki had toyed around with the idea of Giorno eventually being revealed to be a girl pretending to be a man. Of course, he was just joking about it but Sekiya strongly believes that Araki really wanted Giorno to be a woman.

Although Araki didn't get his wish with Part 5, he eventually fought hard and succeeded in introducing a female member of the Joestar family as the lead in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Part 6.
