Johnny Depp Might Not Return As Grindelwald In Fantastic Beasts 3

The Johnny Depp drama continues and now it might mean major changes in Fantastic Beasts 3. A new report suggests that the former Pirates of the Caribbean star might no longer return as Gellert Grindelwald in the third Fantastic Beasts movie.

Johnny Depp's casting in Fantastic Beasts was controversial from the start. After all, his brief appearance in the first film was overshadowed by a messy divorce from Amber Heard, who revealed she was a victim of domestic abuse. Nevertheless, Depp was able to sign a five-picture contract with Warner Bros. for the Harry Potter spin-off movies. But is it possible that the studio has decided to do away with Depp for the third Fantastic Beasts film?

A report from The Blast reveals that Depp has not yet been asked to return for Fantastic Beasts 3. A source close to the actor had reportedly confirmed that Warner Bros. has yet to approach Depp to "exercise the option in his contract" for the third movie.

This is certainly a curious move for Warner Bros. considering that Depp plays one of the lead characters in the Harry Potter films. The second movie actually has the name Grindelwald in the title. Of course, there is a possibility that Fantastic Beasts 3 will focus on Jude Law's young Dumbledore as he tries to prepare to face an old friend and foe. Nevertheless, Grindelwald should at least show up in the flick at some point, right?

Unfortunately, it seems like Depp's personal life has caught up with his professional life. The report also states that there are a few executives who want to fire the actor from Fantastic Beasts 3. However, some "heavy hitters", including Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling, continue to defend Depp and want him to keep playing Grindelwald.

Warner Bros. has not made an official announcement about the Fantastic Beasts 3 casting. In the meantime, the film is still scheduled for release on November 12, 2021.
