Johnny Depp is reportedly “devastated” after his close friend and collaborator, Jeff Beck, died after “suddenly contracting bacterial meningitis” on Tuesday, January 10. He was 78.
Depp and Beck are known to be tight-knit. They recently did a series of shows together, and there were even reports that Amber Heard’s ex-husband was at the rock legend’s bedside when he died, along with “some other rock stars.”
Johnny Depp, Jeff Beck’s Close Friendship
Depp is now mourning the sudden death of his friend.
"They had a really tight friendship, they were extremely close, and he got even closer over this past summer when they were touring together," a source told People.
"The sickness came on really quickly and it all deteriorated rapidly in the last couple of weeks,” the insider added. "Johnny is still processing this news. He's devastated."
As often collaborators, the two rock stars released a collaboration album, 18, in July 2022.
They then dropped an official music video for their first single, “This is a Song for Miss Hedy Lamarr.”
"It's an extraordinary honor to play and write music with Jeff, one of the true greats and someone I am now privileged enough to call my brother," the Pirates of the Caribbean star said at the time.
"I haven't had another creative partner like him for ages," the guitar legend said of Depp, alternatively. "He was a major force on this record. I just hope people will take him seriously as a musician because it's a hard thing for some people to accept that Johnny Depp can sing rock and roll."
Aside from releasing an album, the pair also performed at several gigs together. They also released a cover of John Lennon’s “Isolation” in 2020.
The Death of Jeff Beck
Beck’s death came as a surprise as he recently did a series of shows with Depp. In fact, they took the stage together after the A-list actor’s much-publicized trial with his ex-wife, Amber Heard.
"On behalf of his family, it is with deep and profound sadness that we share the news of Jeff Beck’s passing,” Beck’s family announced in a statement on Wednesday, July 11, via TMZ. “After suddenly contracting bacterial meningitis, he peacefully passed away yesterday. His family asks for privacy while they process this tremendous loss."
