The Continental series takes place in the 1970s, around four decades before the events of the first John Wick film. The series’ events are set in the past as it explores Winston’s life before he became the proprietor of the New York Continental.

“What we’re exploring in The Continental is the young Winston and how it came to be that he and his team of confederates found their way into this hotel which we have met for the first time in the movie franchise 40 years later,” said Kevin Beggs, chairman of Lionsgate Television.

Additionally, while no exact date is provided as to when The Continental is set, Beggs mentioned in the Deadline interview that the series acknowledges the 1975 sanitation strike. This means that The Continental could be set at a time between 1975 and 1977.

As to when the John Wick films take place, they are likely set in the year 2014, when the first film was released. Talking about the timeframe of the four John Wick films, director Chad Stahelski said in an interview with Collider:

“Well, we figured the first three movies almost happened in like a week, week and a half, somewhere in there. That's my version, I think Keanu’s is a little different, and I think this is like six months later. So within a year, I think it all happens. I would say almost within 7 to 8 months.”

Colin Woodell plays a younger version of Winston Scott, a character portrayed by Ian McShane in the John Wick films. Woodell described his Winston as “a completely different person and different version of himself in The Continental than he is in the films.”

Ayomide Adegun plays a younger version of Charon, a character portrayed by the late Lance Reddick in the John Wick films. In The Continental, Charon is working for Cormac, the one who runs the New York Continental in the 1970s.

Peter Greene plays a younger version of Uncle Charlie, a character portrayed by David Patrick Kelly in the John Wick films.

As The Continental takes place in the 1970s, it is possible that John Wick may not have been born yet. So, it is unlikely that Keanu Reeves will be appearing in the series.
