Though Star Wars: The Last Jedi was a critical success, it didn't so well with a whole bunch of fans, and Disney had attempted a ‘course-correct' with The Rise of Skywalker—much to everyone's dismay. With a lot of people bashing J.J. Abrams for the panderfest that was TROS, John Boyega has come up to bat to ask people to stop hating on the director.
Talking to GQ about Abrams, Boyega had said, "Everybody needs to leave my boy [Abrams] alone. He wasn't even supposed to come back and try to save your shit." Just in case you didn't know, the movie was originally supposed to be directed by Colin Trevorrow (Jurassic World), but after he was fired, Abrams was called back to write and helm the film.
If anything, I don't think Abrams is solely to blame for what happened with The Rise of Skywalker. Word had it that Disney was extra-meddlesome with the production of this film and that they had demanded a lot of changes to pander to ‘what the fans wanted' (one includes the Reylo kiss). Of course, this is just hearsay going around the internet, but even screenwriter Chris Terrio had confirmed that had ‘never rewritten a film as much as this one,' and that there was a new script almost every morning.
For now, Star Wars is rightfully taking a hiatus for a few years, with Kathleen Kennedy using the time take a big look at the direction the franchise should go. Hopefully, we still get more of this Sequel Era because there just feels like more stories to tell with Finn, Poe, and Rey.
In the meantime, fans wait for the release of The Mandalorian Season 2 on Oct. 30.
