Spider-Man Star J.K. Simmons Thought He'll Play Iconic Villain

J.K. Simmons' turn as J. Jonah Jameson in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy has become iconic which is why fans were delighted when they saw him again in the role during the mid-credits scene of Spider-Man: Far from Home and will continue playing him in the upcoming Spider-Man: No Way Home. But as it turns out, the actor has his eyes on a different role during the beginning.

During an interview in a recent episode of Happy Sad Confused Podcast, Simmons admitted that he thought he could be playing the villain back when the first Spider-Man was in its early stages. He said, "It was during [production on The Gift] that the word got around to people who actually pay attention that Sam [Raimi] was going to be directing Spider-Man. And friends of mine would be calling saying, "Oh, you gotta play…" Most of them thought I should play, I think, the Vulture, or whoever the bad guy might be because nobody knew." Eventually, Raimi called the actor and asked him to audition for the role of J. Jonah Jameson, which we all know he ended up playing.

We can pretty much say that things went well for Simmons as he was wonderful as J. Jonah Jameson and it's hard to imagine anybody else playing him. Also, the Vulture didn't end up being the villain in the first film. Obviously, as we all know, it was Green Goblin who became the villain played by Willem Dafoe and he has also become iconic in that role.

Fortunately, we will be seeing Simmons as J. Jonah Jameson again soon as he is set to appear in Spider-Man: No Way Home. It's not clear though if this version of the character is the same one from the Raimi trilogy or the actual MCU variant. Either way, it's just great to see him again in the role and, based on the trailers, it looks like he will have a more significant presence.
