J.J. Abrams Debunks Reylo Fan Theory for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker has spun a whole lot of theories over the past few months, and while most of these continue to circulate online, director J.J. Abrams couldn't help but debunk one theory about Rey (Daisy Ridley) and Kylo Ren (Adam Driver).

Ever since the two were introduced in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Kylo Ren and Rey shared certain chemistry that fans managed to pick up. The connection between the Jakku Orphan and the wayward son of Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and Leia (the late Carrie Fisher) became even more palpable in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. The two were forced together because of Snoke's powers connecting them together, and eventually, the two came to have some sort of understanding for each other. In fact, the Rey and Kylo Ren managed to team up to defeat Snoke.

Though Kylo Ren's decision to continue his path down the Dark Side forced the two apart, fans have continued to wonder what would happen to the potential romantic bond between the two, building an entire theory based on the Red Thread of Fate.

According to this East Asian legend, two people who are destined to be each other's romantic pair are connected by the gods through an invisible red line pulling them together.

Though a red ribbon on Rey's hand in one of the trailers for The Rise of Skywalker seems to confirm the idea, director J.J. Abrams says the Red Thread of Fate wasn't something he had planned for the film.

Speaking in an interview with Vanity Fair, the filmmaker was asked to address the rumors about The Rise of Skywalker bringing Rey and Kylo Ren back together through the Red Thread of Fate.

"No," Abrams replied. "That is not something that we incorporated."

It's such a shame that Abrams didn't use the Red Thread narrative in The Rise of Skywalker. But then again, the film has so much more to deal with aside from romance. Romance is great and all, but Star Wars has always focused on the fight between good and evil, so we're not entirely sure whether we'll get to see Rey and Kylo Ren getting together in the film.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker premieres December 20, 2019.
