When Supernatural ended in 2020, Jensen Ackles set his sights on the development of a prequel for the hit The CW show, which according to him was the reason why he is now playing Soldier Boy in The Boys Season 3.

So, how did that happen?

Ackles discussed his new role on The Boys Season 3 and how the Supernatural prequel helped him land the part.

Jensen Ackles Asked The Boys Season 3 Showrunner for a Role

Supernatural was created by Eric Kripke, but he left after Season 5. The Boys' showrunner is Kripke as well. In any event, Ackles needed Kripke's consent to spin off his Supernatural prequel. It just so happened that Kripke was working on The Boys Season 3 at the time.

With the prequel business for Supernatural in full swing, Ackles was looking for a role he could portray. He's producing a spinoff of the Winchesters, but it'll be set before Dean Winchester was born.

“I was like, ‘I’m going to be unemployed pretty soon. So whenever you’re ready for me to come on over to The Boys, just let me know,’” Ackles said on Inside of You . “He [Kripke] was like, ‘Hey man, you wanna come over to The Boys, I’ll write you a part. I’ve got no problem with that.’ I’m like, ‘Yeah, dude, I’d love to come over, I love that show.’”

Jensen Ackles Lands a Bigger Role Than He Expected in The Boys Season 3

Kripke, according to Ackles, began recommending a smaller role on The Boys Season 3. Then he realized Ackles was the perfect fit for Soldier Boy.

“He goes, ‘Hang on, I don’t know if I want to bring you in just for a bit part. There’s another role. I’ll tell you what, I’m going to send you over some material, take a look at it, let’s talk tomorrow,’” Ackles said. “So he sends me over Soldier Boy. I read this material and I’m like, ‘Yes! Yes! Absolutely. Who do I have to kill?’”

Ackles had to prove himself to Sony, the studio that produces The Boys, as it turned out. Ackles was cast in the role after four audition tapes.

The release date for Boys Season 3 has been set for June 3. The first three episodes will be released first, followed by the next five episodes on Fridays.
