Jennifer Lopez might just be the center of the Oscar buzz surrounding her performance in Kiss of the Spider Woman, a movie based on the Manuel Puig novel of the same name that was later adapted into a stage musical. With the Oscar season heating up around this time, Lopez weighs in on the chance of potentially getting her first Oscar.
Could the Oscar Buzz Around Jennifer Lopez's Kiss of the Spider-Woman Be True?
In Kiss of the Spider Woman, Lopez plays Ingrid Luna, the favorite silver screen diva of the main character and political prisoner named Luis Molina. In the film, the Latin American divas' song-and-dance routines are used as a coping mechanism to escape their tragic reality.
As shown in the trailer, Lopez dominates the screen as the 'perfect' on-screen star who earned accolades and countless praises from her fans. However, the On the Floor hitmaker has admitted to approaching this film and the Oscar buzz differently around this time.

"I don't [put those expectations anywhere]. I learned my lesson last time," Lopez said in a recent interview with Sunday Morning, "It's not that you can't want more, or that you don't wanna stand up there and say thank you. But I realized that I don't need it in the way that maybe I thought when I was younger. Not that I wouldn't love it. I just wanna do that little disclaimer! I'd be very grateful for that, too."
Lopez continued, mentioning that while she doesn't want to get her hopes up, 'it's great to be in the conversation.'
"But also, the joy, for me, is in doing it," Lopez added, "Every single moment. It's great to be in the conversation, among... like, you're doing work that people recognize, and that they love. That's enough."
Why Jennifer Lopez's Reaction is Understandable
The 'lesson' in question here refers to a very specific awards season she learned back in 2019. She played a pivotal role in the film Hustlers, which earned her widespread critical acclaim.
Similar to how the Kiss of a Spider-Woman received the Oscar buzz, Lopez was claimed to be a frontrunner for the Best Supporting Actress nomination at the ceremony. Considering that she scored significant nominations such as the Golden Globes and the Critics' Choice Awards, fans were convinced it was going to be her big moment.
Unfortunately, when the Oscar nominations came that season, Lopez didn't make the cut.
It's good that Lopez is choosing to be more level-headed when it comes to approaching the special award season, but there are still over three months to go before the Oscar nominations and winners are in place.
Meanwhile, Kiss of the Spider-Woman premieres on October 10.
