James Gunn and Peter Safran's vision for the rebranded DC Universe remains unclear but fans have been digging really deep for answers. This week, they may have found the biggest clue to the duo's next big plan for the franchise and it just might involve Aquaman star, Jason Momoa.

Earlier this year, Momoa hinted that DC Studios is already working on his "dream" project which left a lot of people guessing. A day later, Gunn seemingly teased the next character to join the mega-franchise on his Mastodon profile and it's none other than iconic Superman villain Lobo. This led many to believe that Jason and Gunn's respective teases are somehow connected.

Speaking with ComicBook's Brandon Davis to promote his new film Slumberland, Momoa finally addressed the true connection between his "dream" DCU project and Gunn's Lobo tease. He didn't directly answer the question but his response is quite telling. Jason said: "Well, everyone knows I'm a comic book fan. The comic I collected the most, and I have every comic there is... you can do your research and find out what it is."

To his credit, Momoa has been an excellent Aquaman but many believe he should've been cast as Lobo from the get-go. The actor is also a huge fan of the character and has expressed his desire to take on the interstellar mercenary.

Momoa's statement seems to be a dead giveaway that he could in fact be playing the character but it obviously begs the question: what will happen to his iteration of the Atlantian king? I don't see him pulling double duty because it'll confuse casual fans.

However, I can see Gunn and Safran hitting the soft reboot button on the DC Universe, with a new actor playing the franchise's main Aquaman while Momoa gets to portray Lobo.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom hits cinemas on December 25, 2023.
