Tom Cruise has already cemented his legacy as one of Hollywood's greatest actors and while he no longer has anything to prove in the industry, many believe that he should step out of his comfort zone and join a superhero franchise. For years, Cruise has been the subject of reports about a Marvel Cinematic Universe casting with the most recent rumor claiming that he was playing a variant of Iron Man in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

However, long before that rumor circulated online, the Top Gun star was reportedly Marvel Studios' top pick to play Adam Warlock in the billion-dollar franchise, a casting rumor that first surfaced in 2018. Now, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 director James Gunn is breaking his silence on the "what could have been" casting.

Speaking with Empire Online, Gunn finally addressed the years-long rumors surrounding Cruise's GOTG casting. While he didn't confirm whether the Hollywood icon was truly in contention for the Adam Warlock role, he said that he wanted someone who possessed dramatic and comedic chops. Hence the reason why he chose Will Poulter for the part. Well, that's a sick burn.

He said: "People online were saying, ‘Oh, Tom Cruise should be Adam Warlock... I wanted somebody who was youthful, and I wanted the person who had the dramatic chops and the comedic chops, not only for this movie but for what Marvel will use Adam Warlock for in the future... He could become this really important character."

At this rate in his career, I think it's a little too late for Cruise to join the MCU and I'd like to think that he has no interest in becoming part of it anyway. But can you imagine how things could have been if he actually got cast in a superhero project?

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is set to hit cinemas on May 5, 2023.
