Director James Gunn and his brilliant mind deserve all the credit in the world for creating arguably one of the top five Marvel Cinematic Universe films of all time in Guardians of the Galaxy. What was once perceived as a group of D-list Marvel characters instantly became one of the best teams in the franchise. However, the future of the GOTG franchise doesn't seem all that promising, and James himself has stated on several occasions that he plans to end it all after the third film.
James also hinted at his desire to take a break from filmmaking, presumably for good with the intention of shifting his focus to making television shows, thanks to his involvement in HBO Max's upcoming Peacemaker series starring John Cena whom he worked with on DC's The Suicide Squad.
Taking to his Instagram stories, Gunn reiterated his desire to end his MCU tenure after GOTG Vol. 3 after a fan asked if a fourth film would interest him. According to Gunn, his plans always called for the Guardians' story to be told in a trilogy. What's even more interesting is the fact that he may have teased that our favorite space outlaws could be parting ways after the project. Check out his response here:
It's also worth noting that James has expressed his openness to doing a fourth Guardians film so we can never say never for sure. And as for the possibility of going their separate ways following Vol. 3, Marvel Studios still has the final say, and considering how popular the franchise has become since the original Guardians of the Galaxy film, I don't think the studio would take a gamble on splitting the team but then again. the Fantastic Four and X-Men are coming so I guess they wouldn't want to overcrowd the universe with supergroups.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 hits theaters in May 2023.z
