James Gunn Reveals The Suicide Squad Scene That Went 'Too Far'

It's no secret that James Gunn went crazy with the action scenes in The Suicide Squad. However, there was at least one sequence that proved to be too much for the Warner Bros. executives. Gunn has revealed the scene that they went "too far" and the director even reconsidered the sequence.

We all know that The Suicide Squad was bound to have a lot of scenes that were just plain bonkers. After all, you can't expect things to be boring when the Big Bad (and we mean really BIG) is a giant alien starfish that can control minds. Still, the film managed to one-up Starro the Conqueror with the feud between Bloodsport and Peacemaker that led to the brutal slaughter of several rebel fighters.

At one point, Task Force X is ordered to kill Sol Soria's rebel fighters, a mission that Bloodsport and Peacemaker trying to outdo each other with increasingly brutal ways in dispatching the rebels. Interestingly, Gunn admitted to Variety that he "had a lot of reservations about" it despite the fact that he "loved the sequence."

"It's funny and it goes to the heart of what the movie is about, for me, in terms of Bloodsport's journey of starting to learn that being a man and being a leader is not synonymous with being a toxic man and that the path forward to true manhood is through vulnerability. That [sequence] is a big part of that — just a big dick swinging contest between two people," Gunn said.

Despite being an important scene in the film, Gunn revealed that it's difficult for him to watch the sequence.

"But, man, even watching it the other night in the theater, that's the one place I go, holy shit, we pushed it far," Gunn continued. "Like, it's at the edge of where we could go with that."

Gunn then pointed out that Warner Bros. execs referred to the scene as "the one place that we go too far" and he had added that it was all Waller's idea. "So they are following her orders, and she is in a way the antagonist in the film. So anyway, yeah, I had reservations about that," he said.

There's a good reason why the killing of the rebels didn't sit too well with Gunn or the Warner Bros. execs. After all, it was later revealed that they were simply defending their own country. With that in mind, the film immediately took a different turn.

The Suicide Squad is now screening in theaters and on HBO Max.
