James Gunn has confirmed the release window for the upcoming DCU animated series Creature Commandos.

The DCU is set to have its soft launch this year with the premiere of Creature Commandos, the first TV series under Gunn and Peter Safran's new franchise. It will serve as an appetizer for fans before the release of Superman next year.

The series will focus on Amanda Waller creating a black ops team formed by monstrous creatures with Rick Flag Sr. leading the group. Gunn wrote all seven episodes and serves as the showrunner.

Creature Commandos to Premiere This December

Warner Bros. announced during their panel at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival that Creature Commandos will premiere on Max this December.

Soon after, Gunn confirmed the release window announcement in his social media post. The exact date will be announced at a later time.

This is exciting news for fans as they finally know when they can expect the release of the series and plan their calendar for this coming holiday season.

A December release allows them to potentially attract more viewers since it is the time when a lot of people usually watch shows at their home and it could kick off the DCU on a high note.

So far, the majority of the plot details of Creature Commandos are currently under wraps aside from the basic premise.

The star-studded cast includes Frank Grillo (Rick Flag Sr.), Maria Bakalova (Ilana Rostovic), Indira Varma (Bride of Frankenstein), Zoe Chao (Nina Mazursky), Alan Tudyk (Doctor Phosphorus), David Harbour (Eric Frankenstein), Sean Gunn (G.I. Robot and Weasel), Steve Agee (John Economos), Anya Chalotra (Circe), and Viola Davis (Amanda Waller).

In an interview earlier this year, Grillo teased the series' "funny and filthy" tone and how he's happy to be involved in the franchise.

"And I think because this is a hard R — Creature Commandos is a hard R — it's fun. When we were doing it, I think one day it was me and David Harbour recording, I was on the ground. I had to stop in the recording studio, I had to go on the ground and laugh, that's how funny and filthy it is," he said.

"It's amazing, I'm so happy to be a part of it. I think that is what's different is this guy's the boss, and he's grizzled, white on the sides, and white in the beard, and I'm leaning into all that."
