James Cameron Regrets Losing Alita: Battle Angel Film While Working on Avatar

In just 10 days, Avatar: The Way of Water reached a milestone of becoming the fifth highest-grossing film of 2022. No winter storm weather nor pandemic can stop this from rising before the year ends. Although despite the success Cameron has been looking forward to with this long-awaited Avatar sequel, he couldn’t help but look back on his previous abandoned projects such as Strange Days and Alita: Battle Angel.

In an interview with Empire, Cameron shares two things: what it means to be an artist and his reflection on not having the right opportunity to have helmed his previous projects. Check out his full story below:

“Two thoughts in answer to your question: the first is that the world of Avatar is so sprawling that I can tell most of the stories I want to tell within it and try many of the stylistic techniques that I hope to explore. And secondly, yes… our time as artists is finite. I will always mourn some of the stories that I don’t get to make.”

The Avatar creator continues on to say how despite his missed chance on working with the aforementioned films, it would seem he has no qualms on the turnout of their final product. In fact, he is looking forward to any potential collaboration with his favorite directors in the near future.

“But I feel a great satisfaction when other directors want to explore some of my ideas, like Kathryn Bigelow did with Strange Days, and Robert Rodriguez did when I passed him the baton on Alita: Battle Angel. I look forward to more collaborations in the future with directors I admire.”

Alita: Battle Angel first premiered in 2019 despite its multiple delays in 2004, and it still garnered quite an impressive milestone, with the film becoming Robert Rodriguez’s highest-grossing film in his career. Meanwhile, it would seem that Jon Landau, who produced the first film, is already in talks of an incoming sequel with Robert Rodriguez. Stay tuned for more updates on this story.
