Avatar: The Way of Water is set to make its waves in theaters very soon and, just like any James Cameron project, the film is expected to feature another impressive breakthrough in visual effects with the use of motion-capture technology in underwater space and improved photo-realistic images of the Na'vi more so than in the first film.
While the Oscar-winning filmmaker has been critical of comic book movies in the past, he also credits them as his motivation to raise the bar for the visual effects in Avatar: The Way of Water which he discussed in a recent interview with ComicBook.com.
"Obviously the big comic book films have been driving the sheer volume of the industry," he said. "The rising tide of technique raises everybody together. It gives you higher quality artists, more tools and plug-ins, and code. You’ve got more talented people writing code out there."
Cameron also compared the visual effects of Thanos in the Marvel movies to the Na'vi in Avatar: The Way of Water where he described it as "not even close" to what the team at WETA Digital did in his film.
"Our team at WETA Digital is constantly having new hires, and it’s coming out of that pool. So it improves everything. That said, WETA Effects, as it’s called now, is the best. Right?," he said. "Industrial Light & Magic does great work, but when it comes to the kind of emotive facial stuff that we’re doing... Thanos? Come on. Give me a break. You saw [the movie]. It’s not even close. It’s what WETA did."
Whether you agree or disagree with Cameron's comments or not, there is no denying that what his team did at Avatar: The Way of Water raised the bar of the visual effects technology based on what's seen or heard from the trailers so far and it is what Cameron has been doing throughout his career as a filmmaker.
