During the show's recent panel at PaleyFest LA (via Variety), showrunner Bill Lawrence confirmed that Harrison Ford will be returning in the fourth season of Shrinking, alongside the rest of the main cast.
Despite the new journey for the character, fans should still expect him to be a key part of the fourth season.
"I think people will feel when they come back to this show, that it’s a completely different story," he said.
"And the reason we agreed to do it was that we feel that the cast and characters of this show have enough stuff going on in their life that we are interested in seeing what a new story for these characters looks like."
Lawrence added, "There’s some stuff in the third year that is left unresolved, and it hints that the next year will be different because of what characters are doing and where they’re going. People shouldn’t be surprised if there’s a time jump and it feels like we’re telling a completely different story."
The third season finale was always intended as the conclusion of the three-season arc that they planned from the beginning, despite the fourth season renewal, and they're "hoping people [will] feel it’s an incredibly optimistic and happy ending."
What to Expect in Shrinking Season 4
So far, the plot details regarding the fourth season of Shrinking are still under wraps. It will likely address some of the unresolved storylines from the recent season, including Jimmy's daddy issues.
"I guarantee you, some of the people that watch the show know that they’ll probably see Jeff Daniels again," Lawrence teased. "And Cobie [Smulders] too. What’s that look like for a guy building a second relationship?"
Alice studying in a college near where Paul lives paves the way for a storyline between the two characters. Lawrence said, "It’s obviously with great intent that Harrison’s character is moving to a state where Alice goes to college."
Lawrence also teased that the season will also deal with Gaby taking over Paul’s practice and facilities to build a new crisis therapy clinic, Liz and Derek becoming grandparents, Sean becoming a chef, and Brian's adjustment to parenthood.
Apple TV has not set a release window yet for the fourth season of Shrinking. Production will begin this year.
