Who is Hank MacLean in the Fallout Series?
Hank MacLean, otherwise known as Overseer Hank, is the overseer of Vault 33 in 2296. He is the father of Lucy and Norm MacLean (Moisés Arias) who has a knack for science and committing to his duty as the overseer of Vault 33.
However, far from being a leader of a community and a father to his children, he is much more than that.
Right on the first episode of Prime's Fallout, Vault 33 was invaded by the New California Republic's raider leader, Moldaver (Sarita Choudhury), who cornered Hank into choosing between saving his daughter vs. eliminating the others.
So, what gives here? Why was Hank kidnapped by the surface dwellers? Is Hank a bad guy in the Fallout series?

Why Was Hank Kidnapped in the Prime Series? Original Lore Explored
It is worth mentioning that the Fallout series is only mildly close to the original story of the original Bethesda game. However, some of the central elements remain: Hank is complicated to pin down.
Unbeknownst to his children, Hank was one of the few who were born in the Great War, which rendered his credibility to become a Vault-Tec employee.
As the person in charge of Vault 33, his mission was to breed and oversee the population of the growing community.
When his wife was still alive and discovered his true intentions, she tried taking their kids away from Vault 33, considering she also wanted to return to the surface.
Unfortunately, Hank brought this to the authorities and dropped a nuclear bomb where his wife was, turning her into a Ghoul.
As for why he was kidnapped, it was out of revenge coming from the former residents of Shady Sands, the same place where Hank set the nuclear bomb off.
It was also to keep him from gaining the infinite power source that would have kept the Vault-Tec Vaults up and running for eternity.
While he does want to protect his family, his higher priority lies in keeping the Vault-Tec legacy, which technically makes him a bad guy. It remains to be seen if he'll think of changing once Fallout season 2 gets its stamp of approval.
