I, Tonya’s Paul Walter Hauser Being Eyed for Penguin Role in The Batman?

Looks like the casting process for Matt Reeves' The Batman is continuing to push forward. After rumors came out that Jamie Foxx and Giancarlo Esposito are being eyed for a role, a new rumor has revealed that the movie is looking at someone to potentially play the new Oswald Cobblepot a.k.a. The Penguin.

According to Full Circle Cinema, Paul Walter Hauser is being considered for the role of Penguin. Hauser is probably best known for his role as dimwit Shawn Eckhardt in I, Tonya, but he's also a supporting role in BlacKkKlansman. Interestingly Tonya featured DC actress Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn), and rumor has it that BlacKkKlansman star John David Washington is being eyed for the role of Harvey Dent in this Batman movie.

With Hauser being a character actor, I think he might come as miscast for the Penguin, especially considering that fans would want Cobblepot to be a formidable villain; I just think Hauser is best off playing bumbling thugs, and I don't mean that as an insult since Hauser can be absolutely hilarious in those roles.

If they want Penguin to seem like a serious threat, I would go with someone like Ian McShane, or—my personal fancast—Simon Russell Beale, who played an absolutely despicable (but hilarious) Lavrenti Beria in The Death of Stalin.

We have no shortlist yet for who WB wants to play the Penguin, but hopefully, we get a full cast list before 2019 ends.

Catch The Batman when it hits theaters June 25, 2021.
