Tom Hardy's Lines of Dialogue in Mad Max: Fury Road
According to a fan who analyzed the dialogue in Mad Max: Fury Road, Hardy only had 63 lines of dialogue as Max Rockatansky in the entire 120-minute runtime of the film.
In comparison, Charlize Theron (Furiosa) had 80 lines of dialogue. Overall, the total line count came to 1,247 lines.
However, the IMDb page of the film claimed that Hardy only had 52 lines if you discount any grunts and include the opening voice-overs.
Either way, it is pretty clear that Hardy didn't have a lot of lines of dialogue compared to the typical standard in a narrative film where lead actors usually have hundreds or thousands of dialogues.
After all, the Mad Max films have always been a visual feast with more concentration on the action. Director George Miller has always stated that they are inspired by silent cinema.
Anya Taylor-Joy Will Also Have Few Lines of Dialogue in Furiosa
It will be a similar case when Anya Taylor-Joy plays the younger Furiosa in the new film Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.
Miller revealed in a recent interview that the actress only had 30 lines of dialogue in the new film, which is lower than Hardy and Theron have in the previous installment.
Taylor-Joy stated in another interview that she would go “months” on the set without speaking a single line of dialogue due to the nature of her performance in the film.
"I’ve never been more alone than making that movie. I don’t want to go too deep into it, but everything that I thought was going to be easy was hard," she said.
She did advocate for the character to show a moment of female rage which Miller initially objected to as he wanted to focus on making her internal.
"I do want to 100 percent preface this by saying I love George and if you’re going to do something like this, you want to be in the hands of someone like George Miller," Taylor-Joy said.
"But he had a very, very strict idea of what Furiosa’s war face looked like, and that only allowed me my eyes for a large portion of the movie. It was very much ‘mouth closed, no emotion, speak with your eyes.’ That’s it, that’s all you have."
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is set to arrive in theaters this May 24.
