While anime fans expect that the ride will be somehow smooth for Komi, considering that Tadano is there to help her, the series decided to twist things a little. As of episode 3, Komi already has three friends: Himiko Agari, Najimi Osana, and Hitohito Tadano.

The following episode added two new characters named Ren and Makeru who appeared to be different from other Komi’s friends. Makeru is a competitive student who dislikes losing to anyone despite any aspect of her life. Her main perspective is that she needs to beat everyone in everything.

Makeru’s goal initially puts her in a not-so-good relationship with Komi considering that Komi is the most popular girl at school. Meanwhile, Ren has a crush on Komi. While this can be a healthy and cute admiration, it appeared that it was the toxic type. Ren was actually obsessed with Komi to the point that she could be a yandere.

The added characters tackled toxic friendships or relationships that people, like Komi, can encounter in real life. Makeru’s personality focused on toxic and overly competitive people who wanted the attention to themselves while Ren’s character gave light to people who have toxic feelings or relationships.

These characters seemed innocent and harmless at first but eventually, Komi and her friends realized that Ren and Makeru are toxic. In real life, this scenario can happen to anyone. The episode might not be relatable for everyone but there are people who enter our lives and end up being toxic, which might be the lesson that the episode wanted to teach its viewers. There is also a chance that the series will tackle more issues other than Komi’s situation in the upcoming episodes.
