House of the Dragon Season 2 is officially happening! HBO has just renewed the Game of Thrones prequel series after its record-breaking premiere episode last Sunday!
It was previously confirmed that House of the Dragon Episode 1 brought in 10 million viewers on its first night alone. Since then, The Heirs of the Dragon has raked up 20 million viewers in the U.S. across linear, on demand and HBO Max platforms. The amazing viewership has ensured the Game of Thrones spin-off's renewal, which was just confirmed by HBO (via The Hollywood Reporter).
Francesca Orsi, executive VP of HBO programming, shared a statement regarding the renewal.
“We are beyond proud of what the entire House of the Dragon team has accomplished with season one,” Orsi said. “Our phenomenal cast and crew undertook a massive challenge and exceeded all expectations, delivering a show that has already established itself as must-see-TV.
“A huge thank you [to co-creator and executive producer George R.R. Martin and co-creator and showrunners Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik] for leading us on this journey. We couldn’t be more excited to continue bringing to life the epic saga of House Targaryen with season 2,” Orsi concluded.
The first episode of House of the Dragon thrust viewers into the tensions within the Red Keep as King Viserys I Targaryen dealt with the loss of his wife and son while being forced to name his successor. By the end of The Heirs of the Dragon, Viserys chose his daughter Princess Rhaenyra over his brother Daemon and revealed a prophecy that has been passed down by Targaryen rulers since the time of Aegon the Conqueror.
House of the Dragon Season 2 has not yet been given an official release date. In the meantime, the next episode of the first season is titled The Rogue Prince and will premiere on HBO on Sunday, August 28, 2022.
