House of the Dragon: HBO Greenlights Game of Thrones Spinoff Prequel

Game of Thrones may be done, but HBO is still planning on milking the franchise for a couple more series. News may have come out yesterday that the prequel starring Naomi Watts has been shut down, but HBO has decided to push forward with the Targaryen-based spinoff co-created by George R.R. Martin himself.

Here's the teaser poster for House of the Dragon:

The series will be based on Martin's Fire & Blood and is said to be delving into the story of Aegon Targaryen and his conquest of Westeros. We don't know much about what else could be in the series, but I'm hoping we get a chance to meet the other great houses like the Baratheons or the Starks.

The series is going to be executive produced by Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik. While Condal may be a newcomer to Westeros, Sapochnik has already made himself a fan favorite, directing the best episodes in the series including the Battle of the Bastards and Hardhome (he also directed The Long Night and The Bells, but fans don't really consider those "good" episodes).

Personally, the only thing I'm worried about with House of the Dragon will be the focus on CGI and spectacle rather than character development and drama. If you ask me, Game of Thrones shone best when it focused on the characters, and it was kind of lost toward the end when all we got were dragons and battle scenes.

Let's just hope that won't be the case with this spinoff.

No release date has been announced for House of the Dragon.
