Here’s Why EA Cancelled Two Star Wars Games

It looks like Electronic Arts has been canning Star Wars games left and right the past few months.

Back in January, word came out that EA had been developing a Star Wars game codenamed Orca, a project that was an evolution of Visceral Games' very own Star Wars videogame codenamed Ragtag. The game, however, had been cancelled by the videogame publisher.

Now, it looks like EA has cut another Star Wars title supposed to serve as a substitute for Orca. According to a report by Kotaku, EA has just recently cancelled the Star Wars videogame that was supposed to be a spinoff videogame with open-world systems. The videogame was in development at EA's Vancouver branch and had Criterion as its support.

Codenamed Viking, the new Star Wars project was supposed to be a smaller-scoped game that could fit into EA's timeline – the publisher wanted the product out in stores when it launched new consoles during the holiday season. The developers of the Star Wars videogame had a lot of great ambitions for the project. Criterion wanted a strong narrative and characters. However, the developer's goals didn't really work well with the prototype that EA Vancouver had, and the schedules of the west coast studio and the UK studio made coordination a little bit difficult.

According to Destructoid, EA easily saw that Viking wouldn't be completed by Holiday 2020. The publisher then decided to cancel the videogame, because they didn't really see a reason to continue to develop a game that was intended for its PS5/Xbox Series launch.

Such a shame that the project didn't push through. Fortunately, it seems like EA still has two Star Wars projects in development. There's a sequel to Jedi: Fallen Order and what's been described to be a "more unusual" game at EA Motive. Let's keep our eyes peeled for more Star Wars game news.
