Hawkeye Director Rhys Thomas to Helm Robotech Live-Action Film

For the past few years, we’ve been getting several live-action films and TV shows that are based on popular animes, especially since we are now living in a time where studios are looking for recognizable IPs to set up as one of their big franchises.

Now, it looks like another notable anime is getting a live-action treatment and it will be from the director of a recent MCU release.

According to Deadline, Hawkeye director Rhys Thomas has been tapped to helm the live-action adaptation of the 80s anime Robotech. It is currently in development at Sony Pictures with the script by Art Marcum and Matt Holloway with a rewrite by Brian Gatewood and Alessandro Tanaka. Harmony Gold is also involved in the production.

In case you’re not familiar with the title, Robotech began as an 85-episode anime series that was first released in 1985. The story is set on Earth as they used the scientific advances discovered in an alien starship that crashed on a South Pacific island and developed robotic technologies to fight against an alien invasion. Throughout the past decades, the franchise has spawned several animated TV shows and films.

Thomas is a bit of an unusual choice as the director of the film given his background where he has mostly helmed comedic projects such as the Saturday Night Live short films and episodes of TV shows such as Documentary Now and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. Hawkeye remains to be his most high-profile project to date so he at least has experience in handling a story that is on a bigger scale.

However, it still remains to be seen if the film will actually end up happening since a project like this requires a high budget and it doesn’t have a guaranteed box office success since it’s not necessarily a familiar IP that the general audience really knows. However, the studio seems to be committed to the project given that they are still developing it after all these years and have hired a director who could hopefully spearhead it to the production. Let’s just wait and see if the film will actually move forward in the future.
