Haunting of Hill House Creators Leave Netflix Despite the Success of Their Anthology

The Haunting of Hill House was easily one of the best shows of 2020. It ultimately changed the landscape of the horror genre, highlighting that terror does not always mean ghosts, but rather the fear of losing a loved one and the endearing grief that comes after.

With the success of the anthology's second installment, Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor was also a success for the team, as fans embraced it wholeheartedly. With this, fans are always hoping that Mike Flanagan’s work will forever grace Netflix.

Despite producing five good shows with the streaming site, Hill House creator Mike Flanagan and his creative partner Trevor Macy announced they were officially leaving Netflix for a new deal with Amazon Studios.

In a statement released by Deadline, the duo said they have "long admired" Amazon as a studio. “We are looking forward to working with the entire Amazon team as we bring our brand of genre productions to the service and audiences around the globe.”

Flanagan’s first Amazon series is still being hidden in the vault, but the filmmaker previously noted that his "dream project" would be to adapt Stephen King's multi-volume Dark Tower series. “Nothing would be a bigger honor than to adapt these books,” he said.

In 2018, King took to Twitter to commend Flanagan’s work with Hill House. He noted that the creation is close to a work of genius.

He wrote, “THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE, revised and remodeled by Mike Flanagan. I don't usually care for this kind of revisionism, but this is great. Close to a work of genius, really. I think Shirley Jackson would approve, but who knows for sure.”

With his Amazon transfer, some say he might be able to do his dream project. The filmmaker also expressed his interest to tackle a horror film set in the Star Wars universe.

Given the closure of Flanagan’s partnership with Netflix, fans are still asking if there’s a chance for a follow-up series to accompany Hill House and Bly Manor.

He said he’s not ruling out the possibility but it still requires to have the elements of a piece of classic horror literature.

“If the stars align in such a way that we decide to go back into the Haunting world, it would have to be so much on that track that we've set up,” said Flanagan.

Hill House and Bly Manor are both streaming on Netflix.
