The last Harry Potter film was released ten years ago. But the Wizarding World franchise still went on with the Fantastic Beasts prequel films and the play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, which is set 19 years after Deathly Hallows, which is currently running on Broadway and the West End. Fans have been wondering if we would ever get to see another Harry Potter film through an adaptation of The Cursed Child.
In an interview with Variety, Chris Columbus, who directed the first two Harry Potter films, reflected on the franchise celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. In the end, he mentioned that he would love to direct a film adaptation of The Cursed Child. He said, "I would love to direct The Cursed Child. It’s a great play and the kids are actually the right age to play those roles. It’s a small fantasy of mine."
There's no denying that there's a lot of Potterheads who would love to see The Cursed Child jump to the big screen. Columbus is right that now might be the right time for them to start working on a film adaptation of the play. Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson are all in their early 30s and are still active in the industry. Unlike at the end of Deathly Hallows, they don't need to do make-up to age them up. A huge amount of time has passed since the last film was released so it would be more natural to do it today.
As for the possibility of Columbus directing it, he could be a good choice, but he hasn't been directing a lot of high-profile films lately. But he did a great job on helming the first two films so he has the credibility of possibly directing a The Cursed Child movie.
We are now living at a time where studios are trying to expand their IPs as much as they can. In the case of the Wizarding World, we are currently seeing Warner Bros. producing multiple Fantastic Beasts films and there are rumors that they might be developing a TV series for HBO Max. It wouldn't be surprising if after they make the Fantastic Beasts films, they will move forward with a movie adaptation of The Cursed Child.
