Harley Quinn’s Upcoming YA Graphic Novel Reinvents The Word 'Antihero'

If truth be told, Harley Quinn is just as important as Wonder Woman, Batman, Superman, and Joker in the DC Universe. She's just not getting enough attention in the previous DC movies. In the world of comics and graphic novels, however, Harley is the queen.

There will be an upcoming Young Adult (YA) graphic novel that centers around the teenage life of Harley Quinn, and it's entitled Harley Quinn: Breaking Glass. The novel is written by Mariko Tamaki and illustrated by Steve Pugh.

In a recent interview with io9, Tamaki shared the creative process they have gone through to tell the story of Harley from the perspective of a teenager. The writer revealed that they had redefined the word ‘Antihero' for Harley, adding interesting backgrounds to the novel that would surely change the way we see the DC villain. The novel will go after Harley's roots, not the classic story DC movies fed us.

"Like most heroes, she's had a rough go of life at the start. She lost her dad when she was younger, and she has a single mom who's kind of struggled to get by at various points in her life. But really the key element to this Harley is that she's got this incredibly resolute sense of right and wrong, ultimately," Tamaki said in an interview.

Based on the graphic novel's plot, it looks like we're finally going to see Harley through a different lens. I'm sure that it's not going to be a cliché story about a rebellious teenager because Harley is a complex character.

Harley Quinn: Breaking Glass hits the shelves this September. This is the first installment for DC Universe's series of original graphic novels for YA and middle-grade readers.
