It's official — Grey's Anatomy Season 19 is coming. The renewal news occurred in the middle of Season 18, confirming that there is no end in sight for the doctors at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.

Grey's Anatomy fans were taken aback by this news, considering Pompeo has been vocal about her desire for the series to finish soon.

But this is a good thing. Pompeo's Season 19 agreement elevates her from co-executive producer to executive producer, while colleague executive producer Krista Vernoff will continue as showrunner. With another season officially on the way, let's take a look at what Grey's Anatomy Season 19 has in store for fans.

Grey’s Anatomy Season 19 Cast

It's never certain which of the show's rotating cast members — both new and old — will appear in each new season, but there's no doubt about three doctors being on call.

Pompeo, Chandra Wilson, and James Pickens Jr. have all been confirmed to reprise their roles as Meredith Grey, Miranda Bailey, and Richard Webber, respectively, cementing their status as the only performers to appear in every season of the show.

Grey’s Anatomy Season 19 Premiere Date

It is obvious when the new season will begin airing, though ABC has yet to formally confirm a start date. Grey's Anatomy has had the same release schedule for nearly 15 years, with new seasons always starting at the end of September.

Season 17 was the lone exception, which premiered in November owing to lockup delays, but Season 19 is expected to premiere on ABC in late September 2022.

How Long Will Grey’s Anatomy Go On?

According to The Hollywood Reporter, no decision has been made on whether the show would conclude after Season 19. Given the franchise's worth — Grey's Anatomy is a global sensation that is broadcast all over the world and remains a cash cow with a lucrative streaming arrangement at Netflix — any decision on a final season would most likely be made early on and used to further market the beloved drama.

Grey's Anatomy appears to be going on for as long as Ellen wants it to, and it's possible that it'll try to continue without her if she ever wants to retire. There are plenty of other GreySloan family members to keep the series true to its moniker. To be honest, Ellen could go and Kate could stay on as the proverbial star of Grey's Anatomy in the future, if not as the eponymous character.
