GOTG's James Gunn Celebrates 9 Years of Super

James Gunn may be best known for his work on Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy, but before that movie, he had another "superhero" film in the form of Super starring Rainn Wilson. What's fun is that the film just celebrated its 9th anniversary, and Gunn is celebrating it on his Twitter.

Just in case you haven't seen the movie, here's the synopsis:

Left with only one happy moment in his entire life, the quiet short-order cook, Frank Darbo, knows that he's losing his beautiful former addict wife, Sarah, to the smug, drug-dealing strip-club owner, Jacques. Then, after a wondrous late-night epiphany, Frank plucks up the courage to transform the horrible depression and his simmering anger into something useful, and just like that, a determined superhero emerges, The Crimson Bolt. Now, a large, cast-iron pipe spanner and a loyal female sidekick--the overzealous, Boltie--can go a long way towards winning the eternal battle against crime; however, fighting the scum of the Earth and winning Sarah back are two entirely different things. But, in the meantime, don't steal; don't push drugs, and don't be evil because Bolt and Boltie are in the neighborhood. Is there a crock of gold at the end of the rainbow?

While Guardians of the Galaxy may be PG-friendly, Super has a hard R, complete with violence and swearing. It's actually a really fun film, with some great quotes like "Shut up, Crime!"; we also have some great performances from Rainn Wilson, Ellen Page, Liv Tyler, and Kevin Bacon. I guess it's also worth mentioning that Michael Rooker (Yondu) is in this film as well.

With Gunn's Suicide Squad said to be aiming for an R-rating, maybe Super can be a way for audiences to gauge what kind of violence we can expect from Gunn's DC film. While I still expect it to be toned down, I'm excited to see what Gunn can bring to the table without any PG restrictions.

Catch The Suicide Squad when it comes out Aug. 6, 2021.
