Ghost in the Shell has gotten lots of adaptations, and soon, fans can expect another one. That’s because Science SARU announced a new Ghost in the Shell anime with a release date window of 2026.

As its premiere is two years away, the anime did not get a proper trailer with footage. Instead, it got an announcement video that features animated clips of the original manga panels, complete with a thumping score.

Science SARU’s Ghost in the Shell Anime Release Date Predictions

Science SARU is perhaps one of the most well-known anime studios right now, especially given its eclectic works.

Aside from Masaaki Yuasa’s films like Inu-Oh and shows like Devilman Crybaby, the studio is also known for producing unique titles like Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, The Tatami Time Machine Blues, and The Heike Story.

Currently, Science SARU is still working on the Dandadan anime which is set to be released in Fall 2024, along with the new Naoko Yamada movie The Colors Within which premieres in August.

Unlike other popular animation studios, Science SARU isn’t that big, meaning the studio often only releases one or two major works every year. Thus, it makes sense that its new Ghost in the Shell project is only set to premiere in 2026.

Given that Dandadan is coming out later this year, the studio will likely take the whole of 2025 to work on Ghost in the Shell. Hopefully, that means the anime will come out in early 2026.

Will the New Ghost in the Shell Anime Be a Series or a Movie?

Along with the anime’s premiere, the studio also confirmed that it will be a TV anime series instead of a movie.

While Science SARU has produced a lot of movies, most of their adaptations are TV shows, so it’s no surprise that Ghost in the Shell will also have a series format.

On top of it being a series, the announcement trailer and the key visual revealed that the anime is being made in cooperation with Bandai Namco Filmworks, Production IG, and Kodansha.

Interestingly, TOHO animation is not credited. This is a bit of a surprise given that TOHO recently announced its acquisition of the studio.

Ghost in the Shell Science SARU Announcement Hints at Story

Even though there are not a lot of details about the show yet, the announcement video does give us some clues about what to expect.

The video features the original Masamune Shirow manga panels in animated form. This implies that the anime will be a faithful adaptation of the manga.

This is an interesting decision and one that makes sense. After all, while Ghost in the Shell has gotten lots of anime adaptations, most of them stray far from the source material story-wise.
