George Lucas had More Than 40 Scripts for His Star Wars: Underworld Series

Before there was The Mandalorian on Disney+, George Lucas had been working on his own Star Wars series that had been dubbed Star Wars: Underworld. The project was ultimately cancelled, but we have some new details about the show that never happened.

Talking to Collider, writer Ronald D. Moore shares what it was like to write scripts for the show. He shares:

"… We wrote I'd say somewhere in the 40-something, 48 scripts, something like that… the theory was George wanted to write all the scripts and get ‘em all done and then he was gonna go off and figure out how to produce them, because he wanted to do a lot of cutting edge technological stuff with CG and virtual sets and so on. And so he had a whole new thing he wanted to accomplish. And what happened was, you know, we wrote the scripts and then George said ‘OK, this is enough for now, and then I'll get back to you. I want to look into all the production things.' And then time went by and like a year or something after that is when he sold Lucasfilm to Disney."

Apparently, Lucas had been very ambitious with the series, telling all the writers to make it ‘as big as they wanted'. Lucas was said to have a huge focus on how they were going to pull off the VFX, but he ended up ultimately selling the property to Disney.

If anything, Lucasfilm seems to be doing pretty fine without Lucas at the helm. When it comes to technical achievements, The Mandalorian has already broken barriers, and is setting a new standard for VFX in a television series. Sure The Rise of Skywalker wasn't perfect, but we still have a lot more Star Wars to look forward to in the future.

While we didn't get a Star Wars: Underworld from Lucas, it pretty much seems like Jon Favreau is giving us what Lucas had intended. Maybe he could do something with those disregarded scripts, but now all we can really do is wait and see.

Catch The Mandalorian 2 on Disney+ this October.
