What Happened to the Game of Thrones Jon Snow Spinoff?
Announced in 2022, the Jon Snow spinoff was supposed to be a sequel to Game of Thrones, following the Bastard’s life in exile north of the Wall after he betrayed and assassinated Daenerys Targaryen following her downfall and transformation into a murderous despot before she could take the Iron Throne.
Kit Harington himself pitched the idea and brought on a writing team to explore a dark, psychological character study.
However, with the combined backlash from the mixed reviews of the Game of Thrones finale and the dark story of a traumatized Jon dealing with severe PTSD from his resurrection, wars, and Daenerys’ death, the spinoff was ultimately canned due to its “too depressing” premise, which might not work in a television format.
Not to mention, the sequel might have tried to continue Jon’s story too soon, potentially making it more vulnerable to the backlash.
“But I was very insistent at the start – and they were as well, HBO and George [R.R. Martin] – of like, ‘If this doesn’t… If we don’t find the right thing, then let’s not do it. It’s much better we don’t,’” Harington said on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. “‘And after a little while of thinking about it, it was kind of me who went, ‘I don’t think this is quite the right time.’”

Kit Harington has been open about his struggles with fame following the success and backlash of Game of Thrones, which resulted in anxiety and alcohol abuse.
As he stepped away from the series, doing personal work and focusing on his family with his co-star and wife, Rose Leslie, it looks like he is now ready to return to the world of Westeros.
“I’ve gone, and I’ve done all these other things, and now I feel more comfortable with that character and that world again, and where it sits in my life,” he said.
So, does this mean there’s a chance for Jon Snow’s story to continue in the canceled spinoff?
“Well, we were developing it for two years or so? And I still think there’s a world in which something could work,” he added. “I wouldn’t have gone into it in the first place if I didn’t.”
In addition to A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and House of the Dragon, a Game of Thrones stage play titled The Mad King is also in production, following Aerys Targaryen I’s conquest of Westeros.
There is also an animated series coming from animation guru Genndy Tartakovsky about the legendary voyages of Lord Corlys Velaryon, aka “The Sea Snake.”
With these two projects coming, the Jon Snow sequel could perfectly fit into this lineup, though it remains to be seen if this will happen.
