The Game of Thrones prequel series Tales of Dunk and Egg has named its writer, according to a new report.
Variety says Steve Conrad has been handpicked both as a writer and executive producer of the series, based on the fantasy novellas by George R. R. Martin, which follow the adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall (Dunk) and his squire Egg, 90 years before A Song of Ice and Fire took place.
What is Tales of Dunk & Egg All About?
The kicker is that Egg is actually Aegon V Targaryen, who goes on to become Lord of the Seven Kingdoms and Daenerys' great-grandfather later in life. Because Aegon V was only the fourth son of Prince Maekar Targaryen, who was himself the fourth son of King Daeron II Targaryen, Aegon V was permitted to wander about Westeros and serve a lowborn knight.
Duncan jousts, duels, and becomes engaged in aristocratic politics, Targaryen rebellions, and more in the three novellas. As they journey around Westeros, Egg notices how terribly the feudal system abuses the common people, which motivates him to be a more egalitarian king once he inherits the throne.
Martin has said he has outlined two more Dunk & Egg novellas—The Village Hero and the curiously titled She-Wolves of Winterfell—and has ideas for four more, but he's put them all on hold to work on The Winds of Winter.
The Game of Thrones Expansion
For a long time, HBO has been wanting to expand the Game of Thrones realm. In 2022, the prequel series House of the Dragon will premiere on the premium cabler. The drama is based on Martin's book Fire & Blood, and it depicts the Targaryen civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons.
There are currently several other GoT projects in various stages of development, including 10,000 Ships and Sea Snake, as well as multiple animated Game of Thrones episodes under development at HBO Max.
Despite initial claims that HBO was considering making Dunk & Egg into an animated series, Deadline reported that the show will be live-action.
Conrad's work includes the under-appreciated yet critically acclaimed Amazon series Patriot, as well as the doll-filled noir comedy series Ultra City Smiths on AMC+. His film works include The Pursuit of Happyness, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, and Wonder.
