Game of Thrones Star Emilia Clarke Found the Finale Backlash 'Profoundly Flattering'

When the final Game of Thrones season came out, it was no mystery that the internet was absolutely fuming over the rushed plot and forced character arcs. A lot of other actors (like Kit Harington) have come to the defense of the show, citing that the fans were being a bit too much when it came to the hate, but Emilia Clarke had a more interesting response.

Talking to Variety, Clarke was asked about the backlash, to which she replied:

"You know what? It was profoundly flattering is what it was because when someone cares that much that they're ready to make such a noise about how they believe the characters should've been finished and how the story should've gone. That's just enormously flattering. That just shows how much everybody loved it."

If anything, the character arc of Clarke's Daenerys Targaryen was considered one of the worst things to come out of the final season. After years of making Daenerys out to be a savior of sorts, the final season had quickly turned her into the big villain of Season 8, all culminating in Daenerys killing innocents and having a Hitler-like speech about dominating the rest of Westeros.

To be fair, fans have always been praising the actors and the crew for doing a phenomenal job on the show. It's the showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss that have been getting most of the internet blame. At least Clarke knows that the fans are ultimately on her side. It's clear she didn't agree where the show took her character either.

Game of Thrones may be done, but HBO is working on multiple spinoffs, the first of which could come out sometime in 2021.
