Game of Thrones Season 8: Sophie Turner Opens Up About Depression, Thoughts on Suicide

Sophie Turner has come out as one of the biggest stars from Game of Thrones, and even her character of Sansa Stark has risen to be one of the main players of the show. Talking to Dr. Phil, Turner opens up about her depression over the course of the show, and how she was contemplating suicide for a while.

Turner explained that she was dealing with depression for five-six years over the pressure to keep her figure better for the show. She says:

"I was so in love with [working on ‘Game of Thrones'] … I couldn't believe I was going to get paid for it … Everything was incredible, it only started to go downhill I think when I started to hit puberty and really puberty at like 17 and my metabolism was slowing down massively and I was gaining weight… and there was the social media scrutiny and everything and that was when it kind of hit me."

With Turner having worked on Game of Thrones since she was just 14, you can only imagine the pressure that she had to undergo, what with fan criticism and puberty of all things. She even talks about thoughts on suicide but seems more like a curiosity rather than a serious consideration. Turner explains:

"It's weird. I say I wasn't very depressed when I was younger, but I used to think about suicide a lot when I was younger. I don't know why though… Maybe it's just a weird fascination I used to have, but yeah, I used to think about it. I don't think I ever would have gone through with it. I don't know."

For now, it seems that Turner is doing much better. She's currently engaged to Joe Jonas, and she says that he has helped her when it comes to loving herself a bit more. With all the show constantly pulling the rug from under Sansa for several seasons, it's hard to imagine that Turner herself was going through her own struggles behind the scenes.

Now Sansa seems to be on top of thing as the Lady of Winterfell, and Turner is doing better as well. Catch her in the next episode of Game of Thrones which airs this Sunday on HBO.
