Max released a short teaser video for its forthcoming shows in 2024-2025, including season 2 of the highly awaited series "The Last of Us". This was shown just before the last episode of "House of the Dragon" Season 2 was released on August 5 by the American streaming service.
This article contains mild spoilers from season one's finale of The Last Of Us.
The Last of Us Season 2 to Feature New Faces
Based on the hugely successful video game series, The Last of Us (TLOU) depicts a post-apocalyptic world in which a terrible fungal illness has spread across humanity, turning everyone into zombies. Ellie (Bella Ramsey) and Joel (Pedro Pascal), the two survivors, 14 and 56 years old, must fend for themselves.
Even though the teaser only features a short 18-20 second clip from The Last of Us II, it does feature the addition of new cast members, including Jeffrey Wright as Washington Liberation Front leader Isaac, Isabela Merced as Dina, and Kaitlyn Dever as vengeful character Abby. Although Catherine O'Hara has joined the cast, her exact role is still uncertain based on the teaser.
In the teaser, Joel(Pascal) is questioned by Catherine O'Hara's new character, who may be a prospective counselor, “Did you hurt her? What did you do?”, to which Joel replies, “I saved her”.
This scenario brings back memories from the season one finale when Joel had to use drastic measures to save Ellie (Ramsey) from the Fireflies.
Returning Cast Members in The Last of Us Season 2
Rutina Wesley plays Tommy's wife, Maria, and Gabriel Luna plays Joel's brother Tommy, who are both back in the cast. Ariela Barer as Mel, a young doctor; Tati Gabrielle as Nora, a medic; Young Mazino as Jesse, a figure with a complex sense of duty; and Spencer Lord as Owen the warrior, are among the new cast members.
What Can We Expect from Season 2?
Season two of TLOU is said to have slight changes, which are somewhat different from the video game; the showrunners confirmed this to British HQ, saying, “There are going to be things that are going to be different, and there are things that are going to be identical” said Craig Mazin(writer and producer).
Further, he added, “There are things that are going to be added and enriched. There are some things that are going to be flipped. Our goal remains exactly what it was for the first season, which is to deliver a show that makes fans happy. We've got an incredible returning cast. It's a daunting task. But Jesus, so was the first season. You can't make everyone happy. But we've made a lot of people happy and that's our intention to do it again.”
Speaking to Deadline in 2024, Mazin added, “Our show as people know it on HBO is going to cover the material from the second game and then quite a bit of material that is relevant to that story but, as I said, wanders down interesting new paths, unseen stories that were told within the context of that games material.”
Although a precise release date has not been confirmed, the series is scheduled for release in 2025.
