In Feud: Capote vs the Swans we learn about the detrimental effects of Truman Capote's unfinished novel Answered Prayers on his relationship with New York's high society.
The novel was nominally a work of fiction but it still constituted a thinly veiled account of true scandals in the personal lives of New York's socialites and their husbands.
The publications of some Answered Prayers chapters in the Esquire magazine led Capote's former friends, including Babe Palley (Naomi Watts), Slim Keith (Diane Lane), and C. Z. Guest (Chloë Sevigny) to plot their revenge against him.
Creator Ryan Murphy has said about the titular swans:
“They were like the original Real Housewives. That’s something now that people are obsessed with.”
Regarding the fallout between Capote and his female friends, Murphy has further mentioned:
“It was a story about ambition, friendship, and writer’s block, It was a story about how you top yourself, and whether you even can.
And it was, at its core, a story about relationships between men and women, specifically gay men and their girlfriends.
