The Fantastic Beasts series has been a solid continuation of the Harry Potter franchise. It focuses on preeminent magizoologist Newt Scamander's adventure throughout the wizarding world decades before the events of the first Harry Potter story. Now, we know when we will get to see the character's next journey and it's actually not longer than you might think.
It was revealed via social media that the third Fantastic Beasts, which is now officially titled "The Secrets of Dumbledore," will be released in theaters on April 15, 2022 (which is just seven months away). It was moved up from its original July 15 date. The new release schedule puts the film in the coveted Eastern weekend slot.
Here's the official logline of the film (per Variety): "Professor Albus Dumbledore knows the powerful Dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald is moving to seize control of the wizarding world. Unable to stop him alone, he entrusts Magizoologist Newt Scamander to lead an intrepid team of wizards, witches, and one brave Muggle baker on a dangerous mission, where they encounter old and new beasts and clash with Grindelwald's growing legion of followers. But with the stakes so high, how long can Dumbledore remain on the sidelines?"
Moving the film to an April 2022 release date might be as a result of the studio's attempt to capitalize the box office since it is on an Easter weekend, where it is expected to draw a lot of moviegoers. It could also be a sign of the studio's confidence in the film as they moved the date up instead of pushing it to a later time. It is one of their tentpole films after all. However, the second film had a decline in terms of box office and critics' response so the question is will the franchise be able to bounce back in the upcoming film? We will find out soon enough.
Based on the logline, it seems like the film will focus more on Jude Law's Dumbledore, who was introduced in the second film. After all, he is in the title which puts him possibly in the center of the story and it is likely that they will explore the cliffhanger revelation surrounding Ezra Miller's character at the end of The Crimes of Grindelwald.
David Yates directed the film. Eddie Redmayne, Jude Law, Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Alison Sudol, Ezra Miller, Callum Turner, and Jessica Williams are reprising their roles from the previous installments. Hannibal star Mads Mikkelsen is set to play Gellert Grindelwald, replacing Johnny Depp.
